Playa de Lagos (Vélez-Málaga): The Lesser-Known Beach

Lagos is a small town in the Axarquía, right next to Algarrobo Costa, and for me it’s one of the best-kept secrets in the whole area: hardly anyone knows about it, and even people who come to the beach here every summer often have no idea it’s there.

Getting there and parking

Lagos is about 30 minutes by car from central Málaga, and very close to Algarrobo Costa. I’d go by car without a second thought — it’s by far the easiest way to get there.

The N-340 itself runs straight through the town, and there are several places to park close to the beach: flat dirt areas and parking spots right along the N-340.

What the beach is like

Lagos’s stretch of coast is small, so it’s worth timing your visit for a quieter hour if you want a good spot. It tends to be noticeably calmer at the start and end of the high season, and that’s when I’d recommend it most — for a family day out, a couple, or with friends.

Compared to Torre del Mar, which is much better known and much busier, that’s exactly where Lagos stands out: it’s quieter and nowhere near as crowded.

Getting down to the sand is very easy, with no stairs or awkward slopes.

Come prepared — there are no services here

There’s no beach bar right on the sand, which is exactly why, come dinner time, you’ll need to drive 5-10 minutes (more on that below). Don’t count on renting parasols or sun loungers on the beach either: bring your own parasol, lounger and towels, because you won’t find any of that here on-site.

My favourite plan: a sunset picnic

If I had to pick one plan for this beach, it would be this: a small sunset picnic, with some snacks, good cold drinks and good company, watching the last light fade over the sea. The views are beautiful, and it’s the kind of plan that doesn’t need anything more to be perfect.

Where to have dinner

As mentioned, there’s no beach bar right on the sand here, and no other bar within walking distance either. The closest options are 5-10 minutes away by car, and you can also try a bar in one of the nearby towns, like El Morche, Torrox or Algarrobo.

Budget

This is the kind of plan that can cost very little, or practically nothing at all: somewhere between €0 and €10 per person. If you’re just coming for the afternoon without buying anything, it can be free; add a simple picnic with snacks and drinks and you’ll rarely go over that €10.

Practical tips

• Go by car — it’s by far the easiest way to get there, and there are several places to park close to the beach (flat dirt areas or spots right along the N-340).
• Time it well: since it’s a small beach, it fills up fast at peak hours.
• Go at the start or end of high season if you want peace and quiet — that’s when there are fewest people around.
• Bring your own parasol, lounger and towels — there’s no rental on the beach.

• If you’re having dinner or a drink nearby, allow 5-10 minutes by car — there’s no bar or beach bar within walking distance.
